Wadi El Rayan

📍 Location & Overview

Wadi El Rayan is located in the Western Desert of Egypt, within the Faiyum Governorate, roughly 2–3 hours’ drive from Cairo.
It was designated a protected area in 1989 under Egyptian law.
The reserve spans approximately 1,759 km² and includes two large lakes (Upper and Lower) connected by waterfalls, sand dunes, hills, and a unique ecosystem of desert‑wetland transition.

🌊 What Makes It Unique

  • Water in the desert: The lakes of Wadi El Rayan were created (in part) by drainage flows from the Faiyum agricultural area. The result is a unique contrast of desert terrain and substantial standing water.

  • Egypt’s only waterfalls: Between the two lakes there are cascading waterfalls — a rare occurrence in Egypt’s mostly flat, arid landscape.

  • Dunes, hills & vistas: Surrounding the lakes are sand dunes and hills like Jabal El Modawara, offering panoramic views of the reserve.

  • Rich biodiversity: The area supports migrating birds, desert mammals (like sand foxes, fennec foxes), gazelles, and reptile species.

  • Paleontology & geology: The reserve is near, and includes, sites of ancient marine fossils (such as the nearby Wadi al‑Hitan — Valley of the Whales) showing that this region was once part of an ancient sea.
